Montessori Bead Chains

This activity teaches the child skip counting which is preparation for multiplication. It also indirectly prepares the child to understand squaring numbers.

At its simplest, this activity is good for practicing number order. That after 29 comes 30, and after 39 comes 40, etc.

On the next level, it illustrates skip counting, counting by twos, threes, or fives.

An older child will see the multiplication tables from these chains.

Example:
When we do skip counting of five, we take out the chain 5. Count each section 5, 10,15, 20, and 25.

The child can also record the number for skip counting of 5.

When a child counts short bead chain 5, it reinforces the pattern of 5 in his mind.
It comes naturally for a child when you introduce multiplication.
It also provides the visual experience for the group of 5.
